Anatomical Society of India Celebrates World Anatomy Day with Keynote by Dr. Nirusha Lachman of Mayo Clinic

Live Zoom session on 15 October 2026 will explore “From the Classical to the Clinical: A Framework for Anatomical Instruction”

To mark World Anatomy Day 2026, the Anatomical Society of India (ASI) is hosting a live online session with Dr. Nirusha Lachman, PhD, Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Department of Clinical Anatomy at Mayo Clinic. The session will be held on 15 October 2026 at 6:30 PM IST (1830 hrs) on Zoom. It is open to anatomists, clinicians, educators, and students across the country as part of this year’s “Anatomy for Everyone” celebrations. Advance registration is required.

The Topic: Bridging Classical and Clinical Anatomy

Dr. Lachman’s talk, titled “From the Classical to the Clinical: A Framework for Anatomical Instruction,” addresses a question central to anatomy education today: how can the foundations of classical anatomy be taught so they translate directly into confident clinical practice? Drawing on her experience of working alongside clinicians in practice-based settings, she is expected to outline an approach to building anatomical knowledge that is relevant, high-yield, and specific to clinical specialties.

About the Speaker

Dr. Lachman is Professor of Anatomy, Chair of the Department of Clinical Anatomy, and Professor of Medical Education at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery. She currently serves as President of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

Her work focuses on integrating clinical anatomy education into everyday practice. She is one of the few clinical anatomists in the world who collaborates with clinicians daily in a practice-based setting.

In a career spanning 32 years as a clinical anatomist, Dr. Lachman has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 20 book chapters, along with an extensive list of published abstracts and national and international presentations.

Her educational work centres on creating authentic, high-yield anatomical content and curricula for specialty-specific clinical anatomy. Her methods include minimally disruptive layered fresh tissue dissection, peer-reviewed literature, and high-definition immersive learning tools.

Honours and Recognition

Dr. Lachman’s accolades include:

  • Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award
  • Legacy Level Member, Mayo Clinic Academy for Teaching Excellence
  • Outstanding Physician Scientist Award, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences
  • Distinguished Service Award, American College of Mohs Surgery

Looking Ahead: Agentic AI in Clinical Anatomy

Dr. Lachman is also leading Mayo Clinic’s institutional efforts to develop Agentic AI solutions for point-of-care clinical anatomy, aimed at optimizing patient care. Her work reflects the growing intersection of anatomy, technology, and clinical practice.
